I enjoyed White Oleander a lot. It's been years since I read it but it was good. I hated Life of Pi though and never actually finished it. If Joy of Cooking is actually the big white cookbook of which I have two copies of, it's about the least joyful cookbook one can possibly own (useful, just no pictures of food and I think all cookbooks should have pictures of food)
