1) The photographer did a great job. The choice of angle emphasized the scale of the subject, i.e. them's honkin' big gates.

2) Why does the Queen have an alter rail in her bedroom?

3) I have now been in the US too long. I saw the title and heard the KY pronunciation instead of the French.

1. The gates are amazing! The fact that they reproduced them at such a cost was hard to believe.

2. The railing I believe is there for the purposes of the morning levee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lev%C3%A9e_(ceremony)). The Queen would awake, but loll about, and she could deal with tradesman, etc on the other side of the rail. This practice was not particular to her, nor to the French, but to aristocracy, who needed their rest, but also needed to get 'work' done. Ha! Nice life, right? Until someone loses their head.

3. What? There is more than one way to pronounce Versailles? Maybe I don't want to know.
