Dining. A lot of it happens al fresco. Mostly the weather, but for a few short months in the winter isn't too cold for dining out of doors. Although it does get mighty hot during the summer. But many restaurants, eateries, nibble-aries and other assorted sorts of food consumptions locations are also out of doors. Much food in the morning and afternoons is consumed while people are seated in makeshift corner restaurants, or standing around holding what is essentially finger food. There is a ton of really interesting stuff, most of which does look really good, but since I was downed by a dumpling a few weeks back, my memories were too fresh to feel comfortable indulging. I know, I'm kind of wimpy, but you try throwing up repeatedly on an airplane, then get back to me on the topic.
Some examples:
These are some sort of egg/flour wrapper around what appears to be a mostly veg insert. They are fried in a wok (see wok with ubiquitous steel drum cooker) and then displayed. I'm not sure what the cost for one of these is, but likely not more than ten to fifteen cents. This is the sort of thing that makes we want to be more adventurous. I used to buy a steamed pork dumpling for breakfast when we lived up at Jin Maio. Now, breakfast is more likely to be fruit and yogurt. Although, then again, I'm totally off dumplings for a while, so maybe fruit and yogurt isn't such a bad thing.
There was a mix of egg/lunch type hand food and sweets at this vendor. The thing he is holding is a bit like an ice cream cone, I think. Some of the walkers bought a few and they were quite impressed with how good they were. The really fascinating thing here is that this cooking device plugs in. Possibly to an outlet in the store front. Possibly just tapped into the local electric lines. I didn't check it out too closely, as the lassiez-faire attitude toward electrical power makes me feel a little faint. Although, it goes well with the lassiez-faire attitude toward driving, building construction, and lots of other things. So maybe not so surprising.
Not atypical outdoor dining. These places are all pretty mobile, in that they set up for breakfast and lunch and generally go home for dinner. There are a few tables and chairs, sometimes, sometimes not. And there is usually a canopy if it is raining or snowing.
The food is hot, cheap and filling for someone who only has a short time for lunch and needs a quick meal. Note the dog. Definitely pet. The collar counts as "clothing."
Fairly typical of both low and high end restaurants. The food is displayed and you get to pick what you want. Like I said, totally common place. Most local type restaurants we have gone to have an aquarium. I do love the way they pull double duty: you know the fish are fresh and its entertainment for the children.
Tomorrow: More of the same.
Ellen, honey, may I suggest for digestive health that you order some freeze dried food products from the US-emergency essentials.com comes to mind. I am pretty laid back about food, but this even scares me....
I am enjoying reading your journeys, though, and hope that you and yours are all fine and dandy. Thank you for the entertainment.
