Wii-ing instead of skiing, because (a) I was clever enough to pack the Wii and (b) this:
Serious wind. So serious, in fact, that all of the chair lifts are closed and the resort, small though it might be, is limited to a single open T-Bar.
It is Ski Week at the children's school, and we have headed out to the slopes for the first time this year. I missed the memo that you can have bad weather during the winter in the Alps (in fact last night had me shaking my fist at the sky, asking why on earth the Austrians ordered snow, when surely making it is easier and more efficient), so this turn of events has left me a bit befuddled. And prayerful glad I packed that Wii.
The wind is painful, but perhaps worse, because all of the lifts are closed but the one T-bar, everyone staying here is spending more time standing in line than actually shushing. Standing in line, or huddled low on the slopes, waiting for the fierce wind to die down enough so that we can see our hands in front of our faces to head down. Hope did not love this one bit. Although, when I mentioned to Jeff that she was crying during one of those periods when we were crouched down together, she put on her Brave and announced, "I was NOT crying! I was just moaning." Ah, family fun.
Whatever, while the white-out skiing is weird and potentially frostbite inducing, the long lift lines make it really painful.
Jeff and I are getting out a bit more than the children, in part because we are more stalwart and in part because they can kick our respective a$$es on every single Wii game. And what is the fun in that?
The good news, surprisingly, given the conditions, is that I'm finding myself hating skiing a lot less than I usually do. Which is kind of nice. It would be really miserable if it were this miserable and I were really miserable, too. But, I'm not. Particularly when I am not coaxing Hope down the hill, the snow is quite lovely and I am having a rather nice time of it.
And so, I would say we are nothing if not optimistic. The wind will die down. Tomorrow. Surely, tomorrow??
And someday I will get back to our Summer Winter break in Argentina. Post Winter Winter break in Austria.
