Love Valley, our guide Mahmet explained, is so called because of the proliferation of those peculiar geological features known as "fairy chimneys." And who does not love a fairy chimney? Hence, "Love Valley."

A Fairy Chimney, also known as a "hoodoo" (snork! hoo-doo?!?) is a tall, thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of a drainage basin or badland. Fairy Chimneys consist of relatively soft rock topped by harder, less easily eroded stone that protects each column from the elements. They typically form within sedimentary rock and volcanic rock formations.
There are a few places on the planet where these are found. Cappadocia being one of them.
They are interesting, n'est-ce pas? If you wipe that silly grin off your face and look closely at the above photo, you can see the new Fairy Chimneys "emerging" from the cliff side. The process takes millenium, so don't be looking for a time-lapse You-Tube video or anything.

Closer HooDoos can be found at Bryce Canyon - there you can stand on the rim of the canyon and look down on them. The name does make you sniker tho.
