We decided to spend our second day in Morocco guide-less in a small town outside of Tangier called Asilah. Its history dates back to 1500 BCE, when the Phoenicians used it as a base for trade. So, old.
The town has an arty feel these days, It hosts annual music and arts festivals, including a mural painting festival: the best paintings remain on the Medina walls for the following years. We spent the day wandering, and the children played on the sea wall.
Its ramparts and gateworks remain fully intact. From when, I am not exactly clear. 1500 BCE seems quite long ago for towers to still be standing.
The town was incredibly beautiful, all blue and white. And peaceful. There wasn't much of anything going on.
Once upon a time this was pirate town,
during the 19th and 20th century.
But there is not a lot of evidence of piracy now.
Maybe just a few wayward remnants,
Argh!
